Elevating the student experience

Our students remain front and center throughout the year, but the transitional moments that happen during the summer provide a moment to celebrate their successes and consider the impact of our VCU Occupational Therapy program.

We’ve just watched our latest graduating class cross the stage to accept their diplomas. Each year, I’m impressed with what graduates have accomplished during their time on campus and the positive impact they’re poised to make in their careers. Only a few days after Commencement, we welcomed our incoming class, eager to explore what the next three years will bring and where they will find their niche in our field.

In this issue, you’ll find several stories that demonstrate our commitment to students and the highest-quality education. A major component of that is our simulation lab, where we’ve introduced some meaningful updates. This is where our students take their classroom instruction and begin to model the skills they will use with their clients. As we take our physical space to the next level, we’re also advancing the associated curriculum as part of our commitment to continue elevating our top-ranked program.

Another annual initiative is our OT Academy, where we aim to introduce the discipline to individuals who might be considering a career in occupational therapy. This includes helping students, especially undergraduates, learn about the profession. Our new effort has generated early wins, as several program graduates have gone on to enroll in our department.

You’ll also learn about the innovative work our recent graduates completed for their doctoral capstone projects. This includes a project that brought theory to life with a NICU-based initiative that is already being implemented to improve care and family engagement for our tiniest patients and a self-published children’s book promoting inclusive storytelling.

In another story, second-year students showcased their creativity and problem-solving at the annual Design Fair, where they developed custom assistive devices like button-access systems for a man with cerebral palsy.

Carole IveyAt the same time, we provide some highlights of work that reflects our related research and service missions. A community engagement grant supports the continued work of Dr. Virginia Chu, who will use these funds to help improve access to early childhood development resources –  particularly for Spanish-speaking and low-income families. During her time in VCU’s Ph.D. Program in Health Related Sciences, Dr. Lynne Hollaway, an occupational therapist in Arkansas, developed a model that will enhance caregiver participation in therapy sessions for children with autism.

Continuing to deliver on our three equally important missions at the highest levels relies, in part, on our alums. The College of Health Professions is launching an Alumni Council, and we encourage our OT graduates to check out and join. You’ll find more details in the newsletter,  including how to sign up for this cross-discipline council.

Read our newsletter.

Enjoy these last few weeks of summer. The fall semester is just around the corner.

Warm regards,
