Students showcase innovations at 2025 Design Fair

In June, the next generation of occupational therapy innovators wrapped up their intensive three-week design course with a burst of creativity and purpose at the annual OT Design Fair.

Over the course, new Grad II students dove headfirst into hands-on training as they learned the ins and outs of woodworking, sewing, 3D printing, electronics and thermoplastics.

Armed with these new skills and a deep sense of empathy, students teamed up to design and build custom assistive devices aimed at breaking down barriers and empowering individuals in their daily lives.

This year’s projects were a powerful testament to the ingenuity and heart of our students. Designs included:

  • A series of customized button-access systems to help a man with cerebral palsy interact more easily with his environment and communication tools.
  • A clever carrying solution that allows a high school student with osteogenesis imperfecta to juggle books, crutches and a wheelchair with newfound independence.
  • A toddler-friendly wheelchair propulsion trainer for a young child with cerebral palsy, making mobility both accessible and fun.
  • A sensory-integrated toy that sparks functional play and engagement for a child with autism.
  • An adaptive fishing system that allows a young adult with a spinal cord injury to reconnect with a cherished pastime.

Beyond showcasing student innovation, the Design Fair celebrated problem-solving, compassion and the transformative power of inclusive design.
